The CEM Award for outstanding achievement in smart grid innovation—the ISGAN Award of Excellence—showcases leadership and innovation in smart grid projects around the world. Projects receiving this prestigious award serve as global exemplars of the value that smarter, cleaner electric grids can offer. Thus, the Award of Excellence helps promote proven smart grid concepts.
CEM's International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) sponsors the award.

The winners of the Award of Excellence were highlighted at the Ninth Clean Energy Ministerial in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Nominations are now open for the 7th ISGAN Award of Excellence competition, sponsored by the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), in partnership with the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF). Scroll down for details.
On September 16, 2020, ISGAN, in partnership with the Global Smart Energy Federation (GSEF), announced the winners of the sixth annual ISGAN Award of Excellence, during a special ceremony during the first ISGAN-PSF joint workshop on “A holistic approach to low emission energy systems through sector integration” at the Eleventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM11). Mr. KOYAMA Masaomi (Director of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan) presented the ISGAN Award to the winning projects.
The ISGAN Award of Excellence international competition showcases leadership and innovation in smart grid projects around the world. The 2020 ISGAN Award of Excellence recognized exemplars in the field of smart grids with a special focus on “flexibility” that will advance smart grids by improving the flexibility of the grid by balancing supply and demand simultaneously, thereby reducing customer losses from power disruptions.
The 2020 ISGAN Award of Excellence recognizes exemplars in the field of smart grids with a special focus on “Digitalization Enabling Consumer Empowerment”.
For the Sixth Annual ISGAN Award of Excellence competition, a wide range of smart grid project nominations were received, representing projects from 9 different countries throughout the world. The winning projects were selected by an independent, international jury of smart grid experts, led by Mr. Reji Pillai Kumar, Chair of the Global Smart Energy Federation (GSEF). The jury selected the winning projects based on the following five criteria: potential impact, innovation, consumer benefits & empowerments, economic rationale, potential for replication and adaptation.
The 2018 ISGAN Award of Excellence, which focused on “Digitalization Enabling Consumer Empowerment”, was awarded to the following:
Emerging technologies have the ability to empower smart grid applications and solutions to analyse large data sets, identify patterns, detect anomalies, and make precise predictions based on its learning experience.
The importance of digital is also growing as global energy demand is being reshaped, mainly on renewable energy – such as solar, wind and hydro – and in accordance with the energy conversion policy. Digitalisation is becoming an essential element to stably manage energy demand with an ever more complex energy mix. The recent pandemic situation worldwide has further heightened the importance of digitalisation and the adoption of IoT in grid operation to ensure its uninterrupted operation even under a lockdown environment.
It follows that a rapid response by innovation-based digitalisation will serve as an important variable for companies to gain a competitive advantage. Energy companies should seek to improve efficiency and reduce costs through digitalisation and IoT technologies. More importantly, digitalisation and IoT technologies will better prepare them to face future pandemic based on their recent experiences. Risk responses such as cybersecurity, information, Data ownership problems, and changes in the working environment are related issues that need to be addressed.
Recognizing the critical importance and the role of smart grids through digitized technologies, we would like to highlight exemplary smart grid projects that enhance the grid stability, balance supply & demand, ensure continuous and reliability of power supply, and enable greater integration of diverse generators. Thus, ISGAN has chosen “Excellence in Smart Grids for Future-Proofing the Grid Operation via Advanced Digitalisation & IoT” as the theme of the 2021 Award of Excellence.
